Leadership Tussle: Two LP Lawmakers Defect to APC

The Labour Party (LP) in Cross River State has been dealt a significant blow as two key lawmakers defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the party.

Brian Odey, who represents Yala State Constituency 1, and Martins Achadu, representing Yala State Constituency 2 in the Cross River State House of Assembly, officially joined the APC over the weekend. Odey made his defection at a ceremony in Yahe Ward, while Achadu was received in Ijiraga Ward.

The defections come at a time when the LP is grappling with internal strife between two factions, one led by Ogar Osim and the other by John Ushie. Despite the turmoil, both factions have assured the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) of their readiness to field candidates in the upcoming local council elections set for October 25, 2024.

During the grand reception for the defectors, Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, hailed the move as a strategic advantage for the APC. “Their decision to join the APC is a major boost. Both Brian and Martins are experienced lawmakers who are deeply committed to their constituencies. Their contributions will enhance the success of our party,” Ayambem stated.
