Lagos State Commences Cleanup Operation, Removes Illegal Shops, Shanties on Lagos Island
In an effort to enhance accessibility and address traffic congestion, the Lagos State Building Control Agency has commenced the removal of unauthorized shops and shanties within the Lagos Island Business District.
The initiative, as outlined on the official Lagos State website, aims to facilitate easy access to high-rise buildings and offices during emergencies. Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, emphasized the necessity of opening up access roads and streets within the business district for swift response by rescue operators.
Dr. Olumide underscored that the ongoing removal of shanties and illegal shops blocking access points aligns with the state’s commitment to the mega city status envisioned by the governor. He emphasized, “Shanties and makeshift shops have no place in the THEMES+ agenda of Mr. Governor,” urging traders to utilize designated markets and outlets.
The Commissioner further disclosed the state government’s dedication to urban renewal, citing the recent fire incident at the Mandilas building. He stated that a structure integrity test must precede the building’s reopening for public use.
General Manager of LASBCA, Gbolahan Oki, expressed concern over the hindrance caused by the long-standing practice of traders blocking roads. Oki emphasized the impact on emergency services during critical situations, particularly in fire outbreaks. He announced a one-week grace period for shop owners in the vicinity of Mandilas Building to relocate their goods.
Despite earlier warnings, Oki noted non-compliance by shop owners and urged them to seize the grace period to salvage their wares. The Lagos State Government remains steadfast in its commitment to clearing impediments and ensuring free flow of vehicular movement within the targeted areas.
