Alleged Explosion in Maitama Caused by Overheated Metal Refuse Bin, Not Bomb-Related – FCT Police

In a press release issued today, the FCT Police Command clarified that the reported explosion near a refuse dump outside the Bureau of Public Enterprise premises in Maitama, Abuja, on January 24, 2024, was not bomb-related. Instead, the incident is attributed to an overheated metal refuse container.

Upon receiving the report at approximately 11:45 hrs, a rapid response team and members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit were swiftly deployed to assess the situation. Preliminary findings suggest that the metal refuse container, subjected to intense heat, activated and subsequently exploded, causing injuries to two refuse evacuators.

The injured individuals are currently receiving medical attention at Maitama General Hospital. The FCT Police Command emphasizes that this incident is unrelated to any explosive device and underscores the importance of caution when handling metal refuse bins.

In light of this event, the FCT Police Command advises the public to refrain from using metal refuse bins and instead opt for plastic or rubber containers for waste disposal. These alternatives pose a reduced risk of incidents associated with overheated metal refuse containers.

“We urge members of the public to exercise caution and adopt safer waste disposal practices. Our investigation points to the overheating of a metal refuse container as the cause of the explosion. Choosing plastic or rubber containers can contribute to a safer environment for all.”

The FCT Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of the public, and further updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
