Lagos Police Arrest 24-Year-Old Man Over Alleged N48.5 Million Romance Scam
Lagos Airport Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with a suspected romance scam valued at N48.5 million (approximately $35,000).
ASP Mohammed Adeola, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the arrest, saying the suspect was detained on Monday while trying to board a flight to Asaba.
“The suspect was apprehended by the Anti-Fraud Unit following actionable intelligence,” Adeola said. “Initial investigations indicate he became involved in fraudulent schemes in 2023 after joining a syndicate specialising in romance scams.”
According to Adeola, the group targeted victims via social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, by creating fake identities and deceptive stories. The suspect allegedly posed as “Travis Kevin,” a white American doctor, and set up a fake banking website showing fictitious account balances.
Victims were reportedly asked to transfer funds—mainly in cryptocurrency—under the pretense of repaying them for medical and living expenses following supposed injuries incurred in the line of duty.
The Airport Police Commissioner, Mrs. Olufunke Ogunbode, has ordered a thorough investigation to ensure the suspect is prosecuted and directed that other members of the syndicate be identified and arrested.
“The command maintains a zero-tolerance stance on criminal activity within the aviation sector, which is a sensitive corridor that must not be exploited,” Adeola said.
The suspect is expected to be transferred to the Interpol section for further investigation and prosecution.
