Lagos Man Drowns During Church Beach Hangout
A heart-wrenching incident unfolded at Elegushi Beach in Lagos State over the weekend when a 34-year-old man, identified as John, lost his life in a drowning tragedy during a church hangout.
The unfortunate incident occurred on a sunny Saturday, as members of an Ikorodu-based church congregated at the popular beach for a picnic organized to bring joy and camaraderie to the church’s youth group, of which the late John was a member.
The distressing turn of events began when the church group was preparing to depart the beach that Saturday afternoon. As they conducted a headcount to ensure everyone’s safety, concerns escalated when they couldn’t locate John, one of their own.
As the group initiated a frantic search for John, they received a concerning tip-off that he had ventured into the water. Swiftly, lifeguards and divers were alerted to the situation, and they commenced their efforts to locate the missing church member in the water. Despite their valiant efforts that Saturday, the search for John proved to be in vain.
Tragically, it wasn’t until Tuesday afternoon that John’s lifeless body was finally recovered by diligent lifeguards at Elegushi Beach. A source who was present at the event but wished to remain anonymous recounted the somber ordeal.
“A church from Ikorodu had come to Elegushi beach for a hangout on Saturday. They were just young people who came around to have fun; about 35 of them came that Saturday,” the source revealed. “It happened that late in the afternoon when they were packing up to leave, they called everyone to make sure that they were all accounted for, 35 of them, before they left. That was how they realized that one of them, John, was missing.”
The source continued, “Then they started searching for him that evening. Then, someone told one of them that he had seen the guy walk towards the water thinking he knew how to swim. The group then called lifeguards and divers to help search for him that Saturday, but they didn’t find him until yesterday, Tuesday, at about 1 p.m., when they recovered his body at the beach.”
Confirming the tragic incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated, “The family of the victim has been contacted, and the body of the victim has also been deposited at the Yaba General Hospital for an autopsy.”
The church and the local community now grapple with the loss of John, a solemn reminder of the dangers that water-related activities can pose, even in seemingly festive and secure settings.
