LAGFERRY Boat Catches Fire at Ikorodu Terminal, Passengers Injured

A boat operated by Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) caught fire early Thursday morning at the Ipakodo terminal in Ikorodu, Lagos. The vessel, which was transporting 19 passengers to Victoria Island, went up in flames around 6 a.m.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) confirmed that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated. However, four passengers sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.

According to a statement from LASWA, emergency response teams, in collaboration with LAGFERRY, other boat operators, and first responders, swiftly mobilized to contain the situation. The agency emphasized that safety remains a top priority and assured the public that investigations into the cause of the fire are underway.

Authorities are working with relevant stakeholders to conduct a thorough assessment and implement fire prevention measures across Lagos waterways.

This incident follows a similar fire outbreak in November 2023, when a commercial boat at the Ikorodu loading point caught fire due to an electrical spark during ignition while fuel was being poured into the engine.
