Labour Party Responds to Controversy Surrounding National Convention Outcome
Following the Labour Party’s (LP) national convention in Nnewi, Anambra state, where Barrister Julius Abure was elected as the new National Chairman, the party found itself entangled in controversy amidst claims of a leadership takeover.
Amidst the backdrop of celebration, a statement attributed to Comrade SOZ Ejiofor, purportedly representing the Board of Trustees (BoT), circulated on social media, asserting a leadership transition within the party. LP officials expressed surprise and skepticism at Ejiofor’s assertions, highlighting his prolonged absence from party activities and lack of evident involvement in recent years.
In response, LP clarified its stance, emphasizing that it does not currently recognize the existence of a BoT, given the departure of many proposed members to other political entities. The party reiterated its commitment to democratic processes and membership accountability, stressing that only active members hold sway over internal matters.
National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, urged all stakeholders to refrain from divisive actions and instead focus on advancing the party’s objectives. He underscored LP’s corporate identity under electoral law and called for unity among members to navigate through the present challenges.
