Labour Party Crisis: Lagos Chapter Calls for Abure’s Resignation
The Lagos State chapter of Labour Party has demanded the resignation of Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the party. The call was made by Rasheed Bamishe, the LP chairman in Lagos State, during a gathering at the party’s secretariat in Lagos on Saturday.
Bamishe, in his address, urged the National Working Committee, members of the party’s Board of Trustees, and other relevant stakeholders to intervene and prevent Abure from proceeding with his proposed National Convention scheduled for March 27, 2024. Instead, he advocated for the appointment of a Caretaker National Chairman to oversee State Congresses before convening any national event.
“The litany of corrupt cases against Barrister Abure has dealt a severe blow to the image of the Labour Party,” Bamishe emphasized, calling for Abure’s immediate departure from the party leadership. He stressed that the Labour Party, founded as a beacon of hope for millions of Nigerians, is now under threat due to Abure’s actions.
Allegations of dishonesty, forgery, and fabrication of signatures have tarnished the party’s reputation, according to Bamishe. He insisted that even if these allegations are unfounded, Abure should step aside to allow for thorough investigations into the accusations.
“In a civilized clime, Barrister Abure should have resigned when the allegations of fraud surfaced. However, due to the prevailing culture of impunity, he clings to power,” Bamishe remarked.
Furthermore, Bamishe raised concerns about Abure’s intentions to orchestrate another illegal convention to reinstall himself as the National Chairman. He called for unity among stakeholders to explore legal avenues to ensure Abure’s removal from office, thereby restoring credibility, dignity, and integrity to the party.
