Labour Party Crisis: Abure Appeals to Obi, Otti, and Other Aggrieved Leaders to Return
The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has called on prominent figures within the party, including the 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and other disaffected leaders, to return to the fold. Abure made this appeal during a recent interview with the Punch, urging unity and reconciliation after months of internal divisions.
The Labour Party has been embroiled in a leadership crisis, particularly after the controversial Nnewi convention, which saw Abure re-elected as chairman despite claims that the process was exclusionary. In response to his re-election, Obi, Otti, and other party members set up a 29-member caretaker committee in July, led by former Finance Minister Nnenadi Usman. This committee was tasked with organizing a broader election to revitalize the party’s leadership structure at all levels.
However, following a favorable ruling in his legal battle at the Federal High Court in Abuja, which affirmed his position as the legitimate national chairman, Abure has sought to mend fences with party dissidents. In the interview, he rejected claims of an ongoing crisis within the party. “I want to say there is no more crisis in the party. The court has said there is only one leader in LP,” he explained. Abure emphasized that the judicial process had validated the national convention and that the party was now working in harmony with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He urged those who felt aggrieved by past events to return, extending forgiveness to anyone who may have wronged the party. “LP is one big family,” he stated, stressing that all differences had been put behind them.
Abure also addressed the broader national challenges facing Nigeria, acknowledging the severe hardships that citizens are enduring. He suggested that these difficulties could not solely be attributed to the nation’s leadership but also pointed to issues within the followership. Additionally, he advocated for electoral reform as a critical step towards electing leaders with integrity and improving governance in the country.
“We need our mindset and philosophy for the Labour Party to drive a change,” Abure concluded, emphasizing that the party must lead the charge for electoral reform to ensure the election of leaders who would contribute positively to Nigeria’s development.
