Labour Party Chairman: “If Alliance Between PDP, Labour Party Will Bring Better Nigeria, We Will Back It”

The chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has expressed openness to a potential alliance between the LP and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) if it promises to bring about positive change in Nigeria. This statement comes amidst speculations surrounding the outcome of meetings between LP’s 2023 presidential flag bearer, Peter Obi, and key figures from the PDP.

Abure, speaking in an interview on Saturday, highlighted that while Obi had engaged in closed-door discussions with notable PDP leaders including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Governor of Jigawa State Sule Lamido, and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, he had yet to brief the LP faction led by Abure about the details of these meetings.

The LP chairman emphasized that it was premature to confirm any agreements until Obi provides clarity on the nature and objectives of the discussions. However, he affirmed the party’s readiness to support initiatives that would contribute to national development, including potential alliances with other political entities.

Abure underscored Obi’s tendency to maintain relationships across party lines, citing his previous engagements with individuals like Wole Soyinka. He portrayed Obi’s meetings with PDP figures as part of his broader social network rather than exclusively political maneuvers.

When questioned about the possibility of endorsing an alliance between the LP and PDP for the 2027 presidential election, Abure deferred responsibility, indicating that such decisions would involve broader party consultations and consensus-building processes.
