Kwara State LG Elections: APC Sweeps All Positions
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a sweeping victory in the local government elections held in Kwara State on Saturday, marking the first such elections in seven years. The Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC) announced that the APC won all 16 chairmanship positions and all 193 councilorship seats.
KWASIEC Chairman Muhammad Okanla-Baba confirmed the results during a media briefing at the commission’s office. He noted that the elections were contested by five political parties: APC, APM, PDP, SDP, and Accord.
Okanla-Baba praised the peaceful conduct of the elections, highlighting the professionalism of security agencies throughout the voting process. “We commend the political parties for their commitment to a peaceful election, with no major incidents reported,” he stated.
The full results of the chairmanship elections show significant margins for the APC across various local government areas. For example:
Ilorin West: APC 50,128; PDP 4,202; APM 1,882
Baruten: APC 38,549; PDP 1,335; APM 665
Offa: APC 22,400; PDP 1,586; Accord 1,919
The elections were significant as they ended a period during which local governments were managed by caretaker committees appointed by the governor.
