Kogi Gubernatorial Election: APC, PDP, SDP Engage in High-Stakes Battle
The Kogi State gubernatorial election has reached its peak today, drawing citizens in large numbers to choose their new leader amidst an atmosphere charged with tension and ethnic undertones, making it a historic and intense political showdown.
With the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reporting a voter turnout of 1,833,160, this election has become a complex puzzle for political analysts, defying easy predictions due to recent surprising opposition victories in February 2023.
The landscape of Kogi State’s politics has witnessed a shift from its historical power bases, raising questions about the traditional strongholds of the major contenders. The tussle for power reflects a desire for a shift in ethnic representation, challenging the status quo.
The incumbent Governor Yahaya Bello’s potential involvement in backing the APC Governorship candidate, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has been a topic of contention. Senator Dino Melaye of the PDP has openly accused Governor Bello of maneuvering a third term through Ododo, expressing concerns about continued influence and control over the state.
Amidst these allegations, Melaye stands firm in his bid, highlighting governance failures, poverty, salary delays, and a call for change in leadership. He emphasizes that the election serves as a defining moment to rescue the state from its current struggles.
The PDP candidate’s stance on challenging the status quo might sway voters, particularly in Kogi West, which seeks a first taste of power, yet faces competition from other candidates, including Olayinka Braimoh of Action Alliance and Leke Abejide of Action Democratic Congress.
Alhaji Muritala Yakubu Ajaka of the SDP emerges as another strong contender, accusing the present administration of promoting an ethnic agenda while relying on his own popularity to secure votes, citing Governor Bello’s failure in governing the state.
As the election unfolds, the atmosphere in Kogi State remains relatively calm, marked by a heavy presence of security personnel across the region, ensuring a secure environment for the electoral process. A police helicopter continuously surveils the state and its surroundings, maintaining a vigilant eye on the proceedings.
The outcome of this election is poised to redefine the political landscape in Kogi State, with voters eagerly anticipating a transformation in leadership and governance.
