Killing of Soldiers: Delta, Bayelsa On High Alert as Troops Conduct Extensive Search in Creeks for Suspected Militant Chief
Nigerian Army troops persist in their search for the elusive militant leader allegedly involved in the massacre of 17 soldiers last Thursday in Okuama community, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State. The search spans across the creeks and hideouts of Delta and Bayelsa states.
The militant leader, reportedly of Bayelsa descent, sought refuge in his mother’s ancestral home after parting ways with his father in Delta State.
Soldiers tracked the fugitive militant leader to Igbomorotu, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, resulting in widespread destruction as residents fled the town.
Conflicting reports arise regarding the militant leader’s origins, with some claiming Awawa community paternity while others cite Akwagbe, close to Okuama community.
Surveillance teams have maintained vigilance since the March 14th incident, aiming to apprehend the suspect. Hailing from Igbomotoru, he engaged in philanthropic endeavors, including renovating Isaac Boro’s home and supporting the Boro family.
However, allegations of involvement in political thuggery and illegal bunkering cast shadows over his philanthropic facade.
Tension grips Igbomotoru and Peremabiri communities, potential hiding spots for the wanted militant leader’s associates.
The military’s relentless pursuit extends to Okuama community, where demolition efforts hint at plans for a military barracks.
Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan calls for prioritizing security amidst a joint committee session with service chiefs investigating the soldier killings.
The Ijaw Youth Council condemns the soldiers’ killing and urges the military to exercise professionalism in its operations.
Delta State House of Assembly demands thorough investigations and urges restraint in handling the crisis.
The Centre for Democracy and Development-West Africa urges impartial investigations and restraint to prevent further escalations.
Mineral-producing communities of the Niger Delta denounce the attack and call for the apprehension of culprits, warning against the consequences of unchecked violence.
Urhobo Progressive Union Youth Wing demands swift justice for the fallen soldiers and urges a thorough probe into the incident.
The search for justice continues as communities reel from the aftermath of violence, emphasizing the critical need for peace and stability in the region.
