Kenneth Okonkwo: “Any Politician Who Can’t Fight Like Fubara Should Step Aside”
Nigerian actor-turned-lawyer Kenneth Okonkwo has lauded Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, for his resilience in ensuring the successful conduct of the recent Local Government Area (LGA) elections, despite numerous challenges.
In an interview with Soar TV on Saturday, Okonkwo commended Fubara for his determined stance to see the elections through, even when security operatives withdrew and some stakeholders pushed back. The former Labour Party (LP) campaign spokesperson noted that Fubara’s firm approach exemplifies the kind of leadership needed to strengthen democracy in Nigeria.
According to Okonkwo, politicians who are unwilling to fight for their rights and supporters, as Fubara did, should “step aside.” He criticized leaders who avoid standing up for their electorate out of fear or reluctance, emphasizing that public office requires a willingness to take risks.
“If you’re a politician and you can’t stand for your people that voted for you… step aside. Because that’s what the job entails,” Okonkwo stated. He added that he would no longer support politicians who do not exhibit the same resilience as Fubara, who ensured the elections were conducted, and winners declared, despite the odds.
The outspoken lawyer had previously severed ties with Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in July, expressing disappointment in the party’s inability to defend its mandate. Okonkwo accused Obi of failing to back the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in resisting attempts by “criminals” to hijack the Labour Party.
Despite his criticisms, Okonkwo affirmed that he remains a loyal member of the Labour Party and continues to advocate for its consolidation as a political alternative for Nigerians. He emphasized the need for political leaders with the strength and resolve to defend the electoral process, stating, “If you rig my election, I will fight.”
In reflecting on his time as the LP spokesperson during the 2023 elections, Okonkwo remarked that while the party won support across the country, it lacked the power to defend those victories. He maintained that his loyalty to the party remains intact, but reiterated his call for leaders who are ready to defend their mandates at any cost.
