Kano Local Government Shuts Down Market Over Alleged Immoral Activities

The Garun Malam Local Government Area Council in Kano State has indefinitely closed the Kwanar Gafan Tomato Market following allegations of widespread immoral activities, including prostitution, adultery, and homosexuality. The decision, announced by Hon. Aminu Salisu Kadawa, the local government chairman, aims to restore order in the area.

Kadawa stated that all traders and occupants must vacate the market premises by January 1, 2025, with strict penalties for those who fail to comply. He described the market as a hotspot for criminal activity, including armed robbery, and said the closure was essential for public safety and morality.

Islamic scholar Imam Abdullahi Yusif Chiromawa expressed deep concern over the negative influence of the reported activities on local children, alleging the market had become a hub for illicit behavior involving youths and married women.

S.A. Gusau, a representative of the state police commissioner, assured the public that security forces would enforce the evacuation order to ensure compliance and maintain law and order.

While the local council has not set a specific reopening date, Kadawa noted that the market’s operations would be reviewed before any decision is made. The closure has drawn mixed reactions from the community, with some residents supporting the move as a moral necessity, while others worry about the economic impact on traders who depend on the market for their livelihoods.
