“Justice Must Go Beyond Arrests” — Ekwunife Reacts to Attack on Anambra NYSC Member
Senator Uche Ekwunife has condemned the brutal assault on Jennifer Elobor, a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Anambra State, describing the attack as “barbaric and inhumane.”
In a statement issued by her media aide, Tony Ezike, Ekwunife said the incident was a gross violation of human dignity and fundamental rights, stressing that no society that upholds justice and human rights should permit the dehumanization of its youths under the guise of law enforcement.
While acknowledging the swift action of the Anambra State Government in arresting the operatives involved, the Senator insisted that justice must go beyond arrests. She called for diligent prosecution of those responsible to serve as a deterrent and to reassure young Nigerians that their safety and dignity remain protected by the state.
Ekwunife, who is also the APC deputy governorship candidate in Anambra, further urged security agencies to reorient their personnel on professionalism, respect for human rights, and operational restraint. She recommended stronger internal disciplinary measures within security institutions, as well as additional safeguards by the Federal Government and NYSC to ensure corps members can serve without fear of harassment or abuse.
Expressing solidarity with Jennifer Elobor and her family, the Senator said the attack represented not only a violation of one individual but also an affront to womanhood and society at large. She called on Nigerians to unite in ensuring such incidents never recur.
