Justice After 58 Years: 92-Year-Old Jailed for 1967 Rape, Murder of Elderly Woman

Ryland Headley, 92, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Bristol Crown Court, nearly six decades after raping and murdering a 75-year-old woman in her home. The victim, Louisa Dunne, was found strangled on her living room floor on Britannia Road in Easton, Bristol, on June 28, 1967. Despite extensive investigations at the time—including the collection of 19,000 fingerprints, 8,000 house-to-house inquiries, and 2,000 witness statements—the case went cold with no clear suspect.

In 2023, Avon and Somerset police’s major and statutory crime review team reopened the case. Forensic experts re-examined preserved evidence, including Dunne’s skirt and hair samples. A DNA profile recovered from the skirt was uploaded to the national database and matched to Headley. He was arrested at his home in Ipswich in November 2024 and charged with rape and murder. Headley denied the charges but was found guilty by a jury on Monday. On Tuesday, Judge Derek Sweeting handed down a life sentence, telling Headley, “You will never be released – you will die in prison.”

Headley’s criminal history includes the rape of two elderly women, aged 79 and 84, in Ipswich in 1977. Though initially sentenced to life, his time served was drastically reduced after doctors claimed his actions were due to sexual frustration linked to his marriage. He was released after serving only about two years.
