Updated: World Bank Approves $2.25 Billion Loan for Nigeria
In a move aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s economic stability and promoting inclusive growth, the World Bank has approved financial support totaling $2.25 billion. This announcement was made by Wale Edun, Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, highlighting the approval of two significant funding initiatives.
The funding comprises $1.5 billion allocated to the Nigeria Reforms for Economic Stabilization to Enable Transformation (RESET) Development Policy Financing Program (DPF), and an additional $750 million designated for the Nigeria Accelerating Resource Mobilization Reforms (ARMOR) Program-for-Results (PforR).
According to Mohammed Manga, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Finance, these funds are pivotal in the government’s strategy to mitigate economic distortions and ensure sustainable growth. The RESET initiative focuses on reinforcing Nigeria’s economic policy framework, creating fiscal space, and safeguarding vulnerable demographics. Meanwhile, the ARMOR program seeks to enhance tax and excise administration, improve revenue collection, and fortify oil revenue management.
Minister Edun expressed gratitude for the World Bank’s endorsement, underscoring Nigeria’s commitment to implementing crucial reforms that foster economic resilience and pave the way for widespread prosperity.
Ousmane Diagana, World Bank Vice-President for Western and Central Africa, commended Nigeria’s strides in financial sector reform, emphasizing the transformative impact of these measures on stabilizing the economy and alleviating poverty.
The approved aid package signifies a robust partnership between Nigeria and the World Bank, reinforcing efforts to rejuvenate the economy and accelerate poverty alleviation, setting a precedent for sustainable development across Africa.
