JUST IN: Two Police Officers Killed in UGM Attack at Abia-Rivers Checkpoint

Two police officers have been killed in a deadly attack on a checkpoint at the Obehie boundary between Rivers and Abia states. The incident occurred around 1:20 a.m. on Thursday when more than 20 gunmen, arriving in three SUVs concealed behind long trucks, opened fire on Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) operatives stationed at a sandbag checkpoint.

According to a police situation report, the attackers, suspected to be militants, were armed with sophisticated weapons. The CTU operatives engaged them in a fierce gun battle, forcing the assailants to retreat, though some were believed to have sustained serious injuries.

Two officers, Inspector Ishaya Audu and Inspector Anthony Emmanuel, were killed during the exchange, and their rifles were taken by the attackers. The assailants’ vehicles were reportedly riddled with bullets during the clash.

Police have deployed tactical teams to the area to reinforce security, search for the stolen weapons, and locate any wounded or deceased attackers. The bodies of the slain officers have been evacuated to Euro Allied Mortuary on Port Harcourt Road, Aba, for preservation.

Authorities in Abia State confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track down those responsible for the attack.
