JUST IN: Trailer Fails Brakes at Enugu Army Checkpoint; 25 Reported Dead, Scores Injured
At least 25 people have been killed at Ugwu Onyeama in Enugu State along the Enugu-Onitsha federal highway. The tragedy occurred near a Nigerian Army checkpoint, involving a chain of crashes that left numerous others seriously injured.
Eyewitnesses reported that a truck, suffering from brake failure, plowed into several vehicles that had been halted at the hilly road. The accident involved 10 vehicles, including both private cars and commercial buses.
“The army checkpoint at that axis continues to claim lives,” stated an eyewitness. “A trailer plying the newly constructed lane failed its brakes and smashed more than 10 cars. More than 25 people lost their lives instantly, and many others have been rushed to hospitals.”
A video shared online depicts the harrowing scene, with bodies scattered across the road and several vehicles, including a petrol tanker, plunged into a nearby ditch. Some cars were seen mangled beyond recognition.
Emergency services are currently attending to the injured, who have been transported to hospitals in and around the state capital. Further updates will follow as more information becomes available.
