JUST IN: Tinubu Seeks Senate Confirmation for Five INEC Commissioners (Full List)
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has submitted a formal request to the Senate for the confirmation of five nominees as Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The request, conveyed in a letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday, is in accordance with Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers the president to appoint electoral commissioners subject to Senate approval.
The nominees put forward for confirmation are Umar Yusuf Garba for Kano, Saad Umar for Bauchi, Chukwuemeka C. Ibeziako for Anambra, Mohammad I. Ngoshe for Borno, and Dr. Owede Kosioma Eli for Bayelsa. President Tinubu expressed confidence in the Senate’s prompt consideration and approval of the nominees.
In a separate communication, the president also requested the Senate’s confirmation of Nwakuche Sylvester Ndidi as the new Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS). This nomination follows Section 3(1)(b) of the NCoS Act, 2019, which outlines the procedures for appointing the head of the agency.
The Senate has referred the request regarding the NCoS appointment to its Committee on Interior, with instructions to return a report within one week.
