JUST IN: Tinubu Orders Ban on Foreign Trips for Ministers, Other Government Officials

In a move aimed at curbing excessive spending and focusing on domestic priorities, President Bola Tinubu has ordered a ban on all foreign trips by ministers and other government officials. This directive was communicated through a letter from the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

The letter, dated 12 March 2024, outlines President Tinubu’s concerns over the escalating costs of international travel amidst Nigeria’s economic challenges. It stipulates a 90-day ban on all public-funded international trips starting from 1 April 2024, with exemptions granted only for trips deemed absolutely necessary, subject to presidential approval at least two weeks prior.

This decision reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to prudent fiscal management and effective service delivery, as stated in the letter. It comes in the wake of previous efforts to streamline travel expenses, including directives issued in January to reduce delegation sizes for both local and foreign trips.

While these measures have garnered praise for their potential to rein in wasteful spending, some observers remain skeptical, pointing to past instances where the president and his entourage exceeded stipulated limits. Critics argue that the true test of commitment lies in the consistent implementation of such directives, especially given past violations.

As Nigeria navigates economic challenges and strives for efficiency in governance, President Tinubu’s latest move signals a renewed focus on fiscal responsibility and prioritization of national interests. However, its effectiveness will ultimately depend on rigorous enforcement and accountability measures.
