JUST IN: Tinubu Declares State of Emergency in Rivers, Suspends Governor, Deputy, and House of Assembly
President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, announcing the immediate suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the state House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.
The announcement was made during a national broadcast this evening, following months of political unrest and violent clashes linked to the ongoing power struggle between Governor Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
A retired military chief, Ibokette Ibas, has been appointed to oversee the administration of the state during the emergency period as the federal government moves to stabilise the situation in the oil-rich region.
