(JUST IN) Rivers Crisis: Tinubu Breaks Silence, Gives Police Marching Orders

President Bola Tinubu has finally addressed the growing crisis in Rivers State, issuing firm directives to the Nigerian Police to restore order following the violence that erupted after the recent local government elections.

In a statement released by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, the President expressed concern over the escalating tensions, including reports of arson and explosions in various parts of the state. Tinubu urged political leaders in Rivers to de-escalate the situation and discourage their supporters from further violence.

“The President has directed the police to take immediate action to restore peace, law, and order,” Onanuga said. “He emphasized the importance of protecting public institutions and ensuring the security of local government workers.”

The crisis stems from the local government elections held last Saturday, which saw the Action Peoples Party (APP) claim victory in some local councils. The announcement of the results has triggered unrest, leading to the destruction of at least three local government secretariats in Eleme, Ikwere, and Emouha, allegedly by supporters of opposing political factions.

President Tinubu underscored the role of the judiciary in resolving political disputes, reminding all parties involved that violence has no place in Nigeria’s democratic system. “After 25 years of continuous democracy, self-help is unacceptable. All disputes should be settled in court,” he said.

The violence follows a fierce power struggle between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who are locked in a political feud. On Sunday, Fubara swore in 23 newly elected Local Government Chairmen, a move seen as escalating the tensions in the state.

In response to the violence, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has relaxed a three-month-long security blockade at the local government secretariats, originally imposed after clashes between supporters of Wike and Fubara in June. Despite this, the police have been instructed to ensure that public facilities, particularly those built with public funds, are protected from further destruction.
