JUST IN: Police Summon NLC President Joe Ajaero Over Alleged Terrorism Financing
The Nigeria Police Force has summoned Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), for questioning over serious allegations including terrorism financing, cybercrime, and other related offenses.
The invitation, signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Adamu Muazu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team, warns that a warrant for Ajaero’s arrest will be issued if he fails to comply.
The letter states: “This office is investigating a case of Criminal Conspiracy, Terrorism Financing, Treasonable Felony, Subversion, and Cybercrime in which you have been implicated. You are therefore required to report for an interview on Tuesday, 20th August 2024, at 10:00 hrs prompt, at Old Abattoir by Guzape Junction, Abuja.”
As of the time of this report, Ajaero has not been reachable for comment.
This development follows recent tensions between the NLC and the government. Last week, NLC leaders accused the government of targeting the organization after security forces raided its headquarters in Abuja. During a press conference, the NLC leadership dismissed the police’s justification for the raid and demanded an apology, the return of seized items, and the release of detained individuals.
The police had claimed that the raid was part of an operation to apprehend an international terrorist suspect, a claim the NLC has dismissed as inconsistent and a cover-up.
