JUST IN: Police Contradict Niger Government, Confirm Hunger Protest in Suleja

The Niger State Police have confirmed reports of a protest by youths in Suleja early Monday, contradicting the Niger State Government’s official stance. The youths, carrying placards with messages such as “Enough is Enough,” “Stop Anti-Masses Policies,” “We Are Not Slaves In Our Country,” “Hardship Is Unbearable,” and “Fuel Subsidy Must Be Back,” took to the streets along the Abuja-Kaduna road.

Despite photographic evidence of the protest, Aisha Wakaso, Special Adviser on Print Media to Governor Mohammed Bago, issued a statement denying any protest activity. The statement, titled “Niger State Government Dismisses False Reports of Protests, Urges Residents to Continue Daily Activities Without Fear,” asserted that no protests were taking place.

However, SP Wasiu Abiodun, spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, confirmed that a group of boys had attempted to block the road in Suleja. According to Abiodun, the police, led by the Area Commander Suleja, swiftly intervened and peacefully dispersed the protesters.

“The operation Show of Force led by the Area Commander Suleja is ongoing for monitoring and intervention where any challenges may be observed,” Abiodun said. He assured the public that the police and other security agencies are actively monitoring the situation to prevent any further disruptions.

Abiodun added that the Commissioner of Police has directed the deployment of additional security personnel and operational equipment in collaboration with other security agencies to maintain order across the state.

Local residents, such as Abdullahi Ibrahim, reported that some shop owners had closed their businesses due to fears of looting.

The state government has been making efforts to prevent the protests, but the confirmation by the police highlights a significant divergence in the accounts of the situation on the ground.

As the situation develops, the public is urged to remain calm and continue their daily activities without fear, as security forces remain vigilant.
