JUST IN: Police Arrest 50 Over Ekpoma Protest
Police have arrested more than 50 persons who took part in Saturday’s protest in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
The arrests were carried out at different locations across the town following incidents linked to the protest. During the demonstration, several shops were looted and the palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma was vandalised.
The suspects were conveyed in a Black Maria to Benin City, where they are being held pending arraignment.
At the court premises, relatives of some of the suspects were seen waiting outside. Security operatives cordoned off the courtroom and barred journalists from gaining access as of press time.
Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, said those arrested were directly involved in acts of violence and looting that occurred during the protest.
Police investigations are ongoing.
