JUST IN: Peter Obi Spared as Labour Party Suspends Governor Otti, Senators Nwokocha, Kingibe, Others Over Alleged Anti-Party Activities

The Labour Party has announced the indefinite suspension of six prominent members, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Senators Darlington Nwokocha and Ireti Kingibe, over allegations of anti-party activities. However, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was notably left out of the sanction list.

Others affected by the suspension are Hon. Victor Afam Ogene, Hon. Amobi Ogah, and Hon. Seyi Sowunmi.

The decision was ratified on May 7, 2025, following the submission of a report by a five-man Disciplinary Committee set up by the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) on May 2. The committee, chaired by Deputy National Chairman Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi and supported by National Secretary Umar Farouk Ibrahim and three others, was tasked with investigating claims of anti-party conduct against top party members.

In a statement released by Ibrahim on Wednesday, the Labour Party confirmed that the suspension takes immediate effect and bars all six members from participating in any party activities.

“Following an exhaustive deliberation by the National Executive, and in line with the powers granted by the Party Constitution, the following members have been suspended indefinitely and with immediate effect: Dr. Alex Otti, Senator Ireti Kingibe, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene, Hon. Amobi Ogah, and Hon. Seyi Sowunmi,” the statement read.

Reacting to speculations surrounding Nenadi Usman, the party clarified that she was not suspended because she is not a registered member of the Labour Party. Rather, she is affiliated with the Obidient Support Group that campaigned for Peter Obi in 2023.

“We are aware that she is a member of the Obidient Support Group that worked and is still working for our 2023 presidential candidate. As she is not a member of the party, we will not dignify her with any sanction,” the party stated.

The Labour Party further accused Usman of lacking the moral authority to speak on corruption, citing her alleged plea bargain with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and supposed asset forfeitures. The party challenged her to explain the sources of her wealth, including properties, businesses, and a radio station in Kaduna.

Reaffirming its political strategy, the party stated that it would not enter into any coalition or merger ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“Labour Party intends to prosecute the 2027 general election as a standalone party, and no further discussion will be entertained on this matter,” the statement concluded.
