JUST IN: Nigerian Communications Commission Announces Ban on Glo Subscribers Calling MTN Lines, Cites Reasons
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has authorized the partial disconnection of Globacom subscribers from calling MTN lines in Nigeria. This decision, outlined in a public notice signed by Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs Department at NCC, stems from the non-settlement of interconnect charges by Globacom.
The notice, issued on January 8, 2024, highlights that, as per the approval granted by NCC, Globacom subscribers will lose the ability to make calls to MTN numbers after a 10-day period from the date of the notice. However, they will still be able to receive calls.
Globacom was informed of MTN’s application for partial disconnection and given the opportunity to present its case. Following a thorough examination, NCC determined that Globacom lacked sufficient justification for non-payment of the interconnect charges.
The public notice states, “All subscribers are therefore requested to take notice that the Commission has approved the partial disconnection of Globacom to MTN in accordance with Section 100 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, and Paragraph 9 of the Guidelines on Procedure for Granting Approval to Disconnect Telecommunications Operators, 2012.”
It further clarifies that the partial disconnection will persist until otherwise decided by the Commission. During this period, inbound calls to the Globacom network will still be allowed. This development signals a significant impact on communication services for Globacom subscribers, emphasizing the importance of adherence to regulatory guidelines within the telecommunications sector.
