JUST IN: Nigeria Defeat Uganda 3–1, Finish Group C With Perfect Record at AFCON 2025
Nigeria closed their Group C campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a 3–1 victory over Uganda in Fez, becoming the first team at the tournament to record three wins from three matches.
The Super Eagles had already secured qualification for the round of 16 before kick-off, but a dominant second-half display confirmed their status as group winners. Uganda, needing a win to keep their qualification hopes alive, finish bottom of the group and are eliminated.
Paul Onuachu gave Nigeria the lead in the first half, converting after sustained pressure. The match turned decisively just before the hour mark when Uganda goalkeeper Salim Magoola was sent off for handling the ball outside the penalty area to deny Victor Osimhen a clear scoring chance.
With Uganda reduced to 10 men, Nigeria took control. Raphael Onyedika scored twice in quick succession, first sliding home from Samuel Chukwueze’s square pass, then finishing again minutes later after a sharp move down the right to make it 3–0.
Uganda pulled one goal back in the 75th minute through Rogers Mato, who chipped Francis Uzoho after being played through by substitute Okello, but the goal did little to change the outcome.
Nigeria saw out the closing stages comfortably to seal top spot in Group C with nine points. Uganda, who collected just one point from three matches, exit the competition at the group stage.
Nigeria will now face a third-placed qualifier in the round of 16 as they continue their push for a fourth AFCON title.
