JUST IN: National Power Grid Collapses Again, Leaving Millions in Darkness

The national electricity grid has suffered another collapse, plunging much of the country into darkness. This latest incident occurred at approximately 6:18 PM on Monday, October 14, according to reports.

Power generation levels, which stood at 3.87 gigawatts at 5 PM, sharply declined to 3.56GW by 6 PM. By 7 PM, the output had dropped to zero, leaving millions of Nigerians without electricity.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) confirmed the grid collapse in a public statement. “We inform our customers of a general system collapse that occurred at 18:48 hours today, 14th October 2024,” the EEDC announced. The utility company noted that the collapse resulted in power outages across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states.

“All our interface Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) stations are out of supply, and we are currently unable to provide electricity services to our customers,” the statement read, signed by Emeka Ezeh, Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) also confirmed the collapse, stating that the outage, which started around 6:58 PM, affected all areas within its distribution network. AEDC assured customers that they are collaborating with stakeholders to restore power as quickly as possible.

Grid failures have been a recurring issue in Nigeria, with the latest collapse renewing concerns about the reliability of the country’s power infrastructure.

This development comes despite recent efforts by the federal government to modernize the national grid with advanced SCADA technology to improve grid management and efficiency.

Power supply has become increasingly unreliable, with the national grid experiencing frequent outages, leaving industries and households across the country scrambling for alternative energy sources.
