JUST IN: Multiple Explosions Rock Maiduguri

Residents of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, were jolted Monday evening after a series of explosions were heard across parts of the city.

Local reports indicate that suspected members of Boko Haram may have planted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in several locations.

Areas reportedly affected include the gate of University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the Monday Market Roundabout, and the Elkanemi War Cemetery area.

Witnesses said the first blast occurred at about 7:00 p.m., shortly after Muslims ended their daily fast during the ongoing observance of Ramadan.

As of the time of reporting, authorities have not confirmed casualties or the extent of damage.

The explosions came hours after suspected militants attacked a military position in Ajilari, on the outskirts of the city. During the assault, the attackers reportedly set parts of the facility ablaze and seized a military patrol vehicle.

Security forces responded to the attack and repelled the assailants. Military sources said several of the attackers were killed, while others fled the scene with gunshot wounds.

Officials have yet to release a full statement as investigations continue.

Further details are expected.
