Confirmed: 23 Dead, 146 Injured in Maiduguri Explosions
Authorities have confirmed that at least 23 people were killed and 146 others injured in the multiple explosions that struck Maiduguri on Monday night.
The blasts targeted the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, as well as the Monday Market and Post Office areas.
National Emergency Management Agency reported that 169 victims were evacuated to hospitals in the city: 108 are being treated at UMTH, 20 at Umaru Shehu Hospital, and 17 at Maiduguri Specialist Hospital, according to zonal coordinator Surajo Abdullahi.
Residents said the attacks have shattered a period of relative calm in the city. One resident, speaking anonymously, described the scenes as a return of fear and violence after years of reduced attacks.
The last major attack in Maiduguri occurred in 2021, when Boko Haram carried out mortar strikes and a mosque bombing in Gambarou Market, leaving at least 10 dead.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed its Explosive Ordnance Disposal team is on site, and joint security and emergency teams are responding. The incident follows an attack on a military location in Ajilari, on the city’s outskirts, over the weekend.
