JUST IN: Mojtaba Khamenei Named Iran’s New Supreme Leader After Assembly Vote
Iran’s Assembly of Experts has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new supreme leader, according to state media reports on Sunday.
Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, is the second son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The clerical body responsible for selecting Iran’s highest authority confirmed his appointment following a vote earlier in the day.
The leadership transition comes a week after Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in strikes carried out by the United States and Israel inside Iran.
The Assembly of Experts, a council of senior clerics tasked with choosing and overseeing the supreme leader, convened after his death to determine the next leader of the Islamic Republic.
State media reported that Mojtaba Khamenei will assume the position immediately. His appointment places him at the top of Iran’s political and religious hierarchy, a role that holds ultimate authority over the country’s military, judiciary, and key state institutions.
