Updated: Manchester United Sack Manager Rúben Amorim
Manchester United have sacked manager Ruben Amorim, the club confirmed in an official statement released on Monday.
Amorim departs Old Trafford after 14 months in charge of the Premier League side. United’s hierarchy said the decision was taken after careful consideration of the club’s current position in the league.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change,” the statement read.
“This will give the team the best opportunity of achieving the highest possible Premier League finish.”
Following Amorim’s dismissal, Darren Fletcher has been appointed as interim manager. The former United midfielder, who currently serves as the club’s Under-18 coach, will take charge of the first team for their upcoming league fixture against Burnley.
Amorim was officially informed of his dismissal after a meeting with senior club executives Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada earlier on Monday.
Manchester United are yet to announce whether Fletcher’s role will extend beyond an interim basis or if a permanent replacement is already being considered.
