JUST IN: Gunmen Attack in Anambra Leaves Seven Dead
Seven people, including two security officers, were killed on Monday in a tragic attack by gunmen in Ihiala, Anambra State.
Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the attack, revealing that two innocent passers-by were among the victims. The attackers stormed a venue where preparations for a burial ceremony were underway and opened fire.
While fleeing the scene, the gunmen targeted two security personnel stationed at a nearby post close to the Local Government Headquarters.
Commissioner of Police Nnaghe Obono Itam has launched an urgent search for the attackers and extended his sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives. “The unfortunate attack claimed seven lives, including two passers-by. However, the Joint Security Team managed to rescue one victim, who is currently receiving treatment in a hospital,” Ikenga stated.
Eyewitnesses described the chaos as the gunmen fired indiscriminately at the burial venue. The commissioner visited the scene to gather more details and assured the public that the perpetrators would be captured and face justice.
“This is a tragic day for the people of Ihiala,” he said, vowing that law enforcement would work tirelessly to bring peace to the area.
