JUST IN: Gunmen Abduct Catholic Priest in Imo State

Gunmen have abducted Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, the parish priest of St. Theresa’s Catholic Parish in Obollo, Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, on Tuesday evening.

The priest was reportedly kidnapped along the Ayayi community while returning to his parish after an assignment. Church authorities have confirmed the incident, and the Catholic Diocese of Okigwe has issued an urgent statement calling for prayers from the clergy and laity for the priest’s safe return.

Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Azubuike, who was ordained in September 2014, was snatched around 6 pm on November 5, 2024. The diocese, in its statement signed by Very Rev. Fr. Princewill Iwuanyanwu, Chancellor and Secretary, appealed for prayers, asking that Fr. Azubuike be safely brought back to his parish.

“We solicit your fervent prayers that he may come back to us safe and sound, while trusting in your goodwill and solidarity,” the statement read.

Local leaders have also voiced their concerns. David Ajaero, the councillor of Obollo ward, confirmed the kidnapping and urged the community to join in prayers for the priest’s release. He described Fr. Azubuike as a good man and called for his immediate and safe return.

As the news spread, residents of Obollo took to social media to demand the priest’s freedom, urging authorities to act swiftly.

Imo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident. Police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, assured that a specialized team has been formed to locate the kidnapped priest and bring the perpetrators to justice.
