JUST IN: Government Sponsored Protesters Occupy Lagos Secretariat, Residents Stay Indoors Amid Nationwide Protests

Lagos State is experiencing an eerie calm on Thursday morning as nationwide protests against hunger and hardship began. The usually bustling Lagos metropolis saw deserted streets and empty public spaces, while pro-government protesters took over the Lagos State Government Secretariat in Alausa.

Key areas such as Ikeja, Ojodu-Berger, and Ikorodu appeared abandoned, with many residents opting to stay indoors. The absence of commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and tricycles, commonly known as ‘Keke Maruwa,’ contributed to the city’s standstill. This stark contrast to the usual hustle is likely due to the heightened tension surrounding the planned protests.

Observations revealed that no Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses were operating, leaving stranded commuters at various bus stops. Early morning food vendors also did not appear at their regular spots, adding to the city’s unusual quiet.

In Alausa, the Lagos State Secretariat was on high alert with stringent security measures in place. Police barricaded the roads around the secretariat, allowing only those with proper identification to enter. This heightened security extended to other parts of Lagos, where commercial activities were notably low, especially in Alimosho, Nigeria’s most populous local government area. Banks and financial institutions remained closed, disrupting daily business due to the anticipated protests.

Clusters of youths were seen along major roads, while security agents maintained a visible presence to prevent any potential disorder. The deployment of security personnel began on Wednesday night to protect government facilities, a precaution against the kind of property destruction witnessed during the #EndSARS protests in 2020.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had earlier urged residents intending to join the protests to adhere to designated protest grounds as ordered by the state High Court. The court had restricted protest activities to Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota and Peace Park in Ketu to ensure orderly demonstrations.
