JUST IN: Give me Power to Spend Security Votes Like Governors, Wike Lobbies Lawmakers
In a bold move that has sparked controversy, the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, has appealed to the House of Representatives for expanded authority over the allocation and expenditure of funds within the contentious “security vote” framework.
During his appearance before the House Committee on FCT to justify the N1.1 trillion budget of his ministry, Mr. Wike emphasized the necessity of the security vote to combat the escalating insecurity plaguing Nigeria’s capital.
The security vote, a subject of considerable debate and criticism, has been frequently utilized by state governors to disburse funds without adequate oversight, raising concerns about transparency and accountability. Critics, including anti-corruption advocates, have long decried the misuse of security votes as a means to embezzle public funds.
“As a governor, my director of SSS can approach me, stating the urgent need for funds to execute a covert operation,” Mr. Wike informed the lawmakers, illustrating the practical necessity he perceives in having discretionary access to such funds. “I shouldn’t have to navigate bureaucratic hurdles to address critical security matters,” he added.
