Amid Budget Padding Scandal, Nigerian Government Allocates N47.5 Billion for School Rehabilitation Without Disclosing Locations
In the midst of swirling allegations of budget padding within Nigeria’s National Assembly, attention has turned to the allocation of N47.5 billion for the renovation and provision of learning materials in 50 schools across the nation. However, concern mounts as the specific locations of these schools remain undisclosed.
Two weeks ago, suspended Senator Abdul Ningi raised eyebrows by accusing the Senate leadership of inflating the 2024 budget by a staggering N3.7 trillion. Ningi, representing Bauchi Central under the Peoples Democratic Party, pointed fingers at Senate leadership under Godswill Akpabio and the presidency for tampering with the budget.
The latest revelation emerges from page 377 of the 2024 Appropriation Act, where ERGP20243999 under the Federal Ministry of Education outlines the allocation of N47.5 billion to “fifty selected Government Secondary Schools Across the Nation for infrastructure upgrade and provision of Education materials and teaching tools.” The absence of specified locations intensifies suspicions surrounding transparency and accountability in government spending.
Arise News TV anchor, Oseni Rufai, questioned the legitimacy of the allocation, echoing concerns raised by Senator Ningi. Rufai’s query underscores a growing sentiment among Nigerians regarding the opacity surrounding governmental financial transactions.
On social media, users expressed frustration and skepticism. @chuudi01 lamented the lack of transparency, suggesting that the undisclosed locations were a deliberate ploy to evade scrutiny. Meanwhile, @FACT_UNDISPUTED decried a culture of corruption, noting a pervasive sense of resignation among the populace towards political malpractice.
@SamuelUzuegbu underscored the need for accountability and transparency in government spending, echoing Senator Ningi’s call for greater scrutiny. Similarly, @advocatepubli emphasized the importance of efficient and transparent use of allocated funds, stressing the necessity for the Ministry of Education to uphold its responsibility in ensuring the proper utilization of resources.
