JUST IN: Federal High Court Rejects Bid to Stop Kano LGA Elections
The Federal High Court in Kano has refused a request to stop the upcoming Local Government Area (LGA) council elections scheduled for October 26, 2024. The application was brought forward by a faction of the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the state.
The plaintiffs in the case, NNPP and Engr. Muhammad Babayo, sought an order to halt the elections, citing concerns over unresolved matters. The defendants listed in the suit include the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission, the Inspector General of Police, and the Director General of the Department of State Services.
Court documents reveal that the plaintiffs wanted the election paused until a motion on notice was heard and determined. They also urged the court to order all parties involved to maintain the status quo.
However, in a ruling delivered on Wednesday, Justice Simon Amobeda declined to grant the request. Instead, he directed that the respondents be served with notice to show cause within 72 hours as to why the election should not be stopped. The judge also set a 48-hour deadline for the filing of all subsequent processes by the parties involved.
The case has been adjourned to October 16,
