JUST IN: Federal High Court Chief Judge Rejects Nnamdi Kanu’s Request for Judge’s Recusal, Case Returned to Justice Nyako

The Chief Judge of Nigeria’s Federal High Court, Justice John Terhemba Tsoho, has denied the plea from Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), seeking the recusal of Justice Binta Nyako from his case.

Justice Tsoho ruled that Kanu’s request for Justice Nyako to step down was unfounded and reaffirmed her as the judge handling the case. He noted that Kanu’s trial, which began in 2015, had previously seen two judges recuse themselves, making Justice Nyako the most appropriate to continue presiding over the case given her extensive involvement.

However, the Chief Judge added that if Kanu wishes to pursue the recusal further, he must submit a formal written motion with an affidavit outlining the reasons. This clarification follows an oral request previously made by Kanu and his legal team.

Kanu’s Special Lawyer, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed the decision, saying, “Yes, it is true. We are awaiting a hearing notice from the Federal High Court.”

Justice Nyako had earlier recused herself after Kanu accused her of failing to comply with a Supreme Court order, expressing a loss of confidence in her handling of the case.
