JUST IN: Court Orders PDP to Allow Sule Lamido Contest National Chairmanship
A Federal High Court in Abuja has directed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to allow former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido to contest its national chairmanship election. Justice Peter Lifu ruled on Friday that the party must provide Lamido with the opportunity to obtain a nomination form and prepare for the election.
The court also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from supervising, monitoring, or recognising the results of any PDP convention that excludes Lamido as a contestant. The judge noted that evidence showed Lamido was unfairly denied the chance to contest the position, in violation of both the party’s constitution and regulations.
Justice Lifu emphasized that the PDP has a duty to create opportunities for its members to serve and must take deliberate steps to enable them to pursue leadership positions. He ordered that the party’s planned convention be put on hold to allow Lamido to secure the nomination form, rally his supporters, and conduct his campaign.
The ruling comes after Lamido filed a suit claiming he was unjustly barred from contesting the chairmanship.
