JUST IN: Boko Haram Attacks Nigerian Military Base in Borno, Kills Commander, 19 Soldiers
Boko Haram terrorists have launched a deadly attack on a Nigerian Army base in Borno State, killing over 20 personnel, including a battalion commander and two senior officers. The assault, which took place on Friday, January 24, 2025, targeted the 149 Battalion in Malam-Fatori, Abadam Local Government Area.
According to sources, the insurgents stormed the base with multiple gun trucks, engaging in intense combat for several hours. The attackers also set fire to buildings and military vehicles. In addition to the casualties, many soldiers were seriously injured, while an undisclosed number remain missing as of Saturday. Among those killed was the base’s medical director.
This latest assault follows another attack days earlier on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Damboa Local Government Area, where ISWAP, a faction of Boko Haram, claimed responsibility. That attack resulted in numerous casualties, with many soldiers still unaccounted for. The group later released a statement along with images of its fighters attacking the military facility.
Since the death of Abubakar Shekau, the former leader of Boko Haram’s JAS faction, ISWAP has expanded its influence around the Lake Chad region, attracting former Boko Haram fighters. The ongoing insurgency has led to over 100,000 deaths and displaced millions, particularly in Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states.
Despite repeated claims by the Nigerian Army that the insurgency has been largely defeated, attacks like these continue to highlight the persistent threat posed by Boko Haram and ISWAP in the North.
