JUST IN: Boat Carrying Over 200 Passengers Capsizes in Niger State
A tragic boat accident unfolded early Friday morning on the Dambo-Ebuchi stretch of the River Niger, resulting in significant loss of life.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the boat, operated by one Musa Dangana, was carrying over 200 passengers, including market women and farm laborers, heading to the Katcha weekly market when it capsized. The incident threw all passengers into the river, prompting immediate rescue efforts by local divers.
So far, eight bodies have been recovered, with search and rescue operations still underway to locate the remaining passengers. This incident echoes a similar tragedy on the Muwo Gbajibo River in Niger State’s Mokwa Local Government Area just last month, which claimed many lives.
Initial reports suggest that the absence of life jackets among the passengers may have contributed to the high number of casualties.
While authorities have yet to release an official statement, investigations are expected to determine the cause of the accident. Further updates are awaited.
