JUST IN: ADC Crisis Deepens as INEC Halts Recognition of Both Factions
Nigeria’s electoral body, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has withdrawn recognition from both factions of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) amid an ongoing leadership dispute.
In a statement issued on April 1, INEC said it would no longer accept correspondence from the faction led by David Mark or the group aligned with Rafiu Bala. The decision follows the commission’s review of a March 12 judgment by the Court of Appeal.
According to the statement, signed by INEC’s Information and Voter Education Chairman, Mohammed Kudu, the commission will also suspend all engagement with both factions. This includes monitoring party meetings, congresses, and conventions, pending the resolution of the dispute at the Federal High Court.
INEC added that it will remove David Mark’s name from its official portal as part of the measures.
The leadership crisis stems from a legal challenge filed by Rafiu Bala, a former ADC vice chairman, who is contesting the emergence of David Mark and members of the party’s caretaker committee as the National Working Committee.
