Updated: 35 Reps Propose Six-Year Single Presidential Term with Zonal Rotation

A group of thirty-five federal lawmakers, operating under the banner of Reformed Minded Lawmakers, has proposed an amendment to the 1999 Constitution to institute a single six-year term for the president and governors. This proposal aims to streamline governance and reduce electoral costs.

In a press conference held on Monday, June 10, at the National Assembly, the group outlined their vision for comprehensive electoral reforms. Spokesman Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere emphasized the need to conduct all elections—from local government to the presidency—on the same day. This measure, they argue, would cut costs and minimize undue influence on electoral outcomes.

The lawmakers also stressed the importance of resolving all pre-election disputes 30 days before elections to enhance the integrity of the electoral process. They proposed the introduction of a rotational presidency to reflect the six geopolitical zones and suggested appointing two vice presidents to handle emergencies such as the president’s death.

Key proposals from the lawmakers include:

  • Conducting all elections in one day to save costs and improve electoral credibility.
  • Amending the Constitution to ensure a single six-year term for the president and governors to enhance governance efficiency and national stability.
  • Introducing a rotational presidency to ensure equal representation and reduce agitation for state creation.
  • Establishing two vice-presidential positions, with one vice president designated as a successor and the other overseeing the economy.

The group also called for stricter penalties for electoral misconduct, including a one-year jail term for electoral officers who fail to provide certified electoral documents within 14 days and a 14-year prison sentence for those who do not transmit results electronically or present conflicting results.
