Electoral Act Amended: Reps Approve N10 Million Fine, Two-Year Jail for Dual Party Membership
The House of Representatives has amended Section 77 of the Electoral Act 2026 to impose penalties on individuals holding membership in more than one political party. The amendment introduces a two-year jail term, a fine of N10 million, or both for anyone found in violation.
The changes were made during a committee of the whole session led by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu. Lawmakers debated the proposals extensively before approving three new clauses, numbered 8, 9, and 10, to the Act.
Clause 8 prohibits any person from being registered as a member of multiple political parties at the same time. Clause 9 states that if dual membership is discovered, it is automatically voided, and the individual ceases to be recognized as a valid member of any party until their membership is regularized according to party rules and the law. Clause 10 establishes that knowingly maintaining membership in more than one party is an offense punishable by a fine of N10 million, imprisonment for two years, or both.
The amendment is intended to strengthen party loyalty and ensure compliance with electoral laws ahead of upcoming elections.
