Several sports journalists traveling to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to cover an upcoming African Nations Cup qualifier between the Super Eagles and Libya have reportedly been kidnapped.
The abduction occurred on Wednesday while the journalists were en route through Iseke, near the Ihiala area of Anambra State. Reports indicate that approximately 11 journalists were traveling in a bus when they were intercepted by armed assailants.
As of Thursday morning, sources confirmed that nine of the journalists have been rescued; however, one is feared dead, and four remain unaccounted for.
Authorities in Anambra State have confirmed the incident. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, stated that police operatives have been deployed to the area to aid in the rescue efforts. “We intercepted information about the kidnapping as it was being circulated on various social media platforms and immediately initiated a response,” Ikenga said. “A joint operation is currently underway, although we cannot confirm if all victims have escaped or are still in captivity.”
Ikenga emphasized the ongoing efforts by the police to locate and rescue the remaining journalists, assuring the public that the situation is being taken seriously.
