Soldiers Allegedly Stab Policeman to Death for Enforcing Traffic Rules in Lagos
A policeman identified as Inspector Saka Ganiyu was reportedly stabbed to death by soldiers from the Ojo Cantonment Barracks. The violent altercation occurred on October 10, 2024, after Inspector Ganiyu and his team stopped a soldier driving an unregistered Volkswagen T4 bus for violating traffic rules by driving against traffic at Volks Bus Stop, along Ojo-Iyana Iba Road.
The soldier, who was not in uniform, allegedly called for backup following a confrontation with the officers. In response, a group of soldiers from the nearby Ojo Cantonment arrived at the scene and reportedly attacked the policemen. Inspector Ganiyu sustained severe injuries during the assault.
Despite being rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital for emergency treatment, Inspector Ganiyu later died from his injuries. His body has been taken to the hospital’s morgue for an autopsy.
The Commander of the 9 Brigade at Ikeja Cantonment has since detained the soldier responsible for the attack, though the identity of the suspect has not been disclosed. Efforts to contact the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, for further details have so far been unsuccessful.
